NEW EVENT FOR 2008!

REDBUD FESTIVAL MOTORCYCLE POKER RUN TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY, APRIL 19

The first ever Honaker Redbud Festival Motorcycle Poker Run will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 beginning at 10:00 a.m. The event will begin at New Peoples Bank in Honaker and will go through Shady Valley, Tennessee and back. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The fee to enter is $15.00 for one rider and $20.00 for a couple on one bike. It will be a poker run with a $100.00 prize for first place and $50.00 for second. Cash prizes will also be given for the oldest and youngest riders.

All motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to participate and enjoy the beautiful spring scenery that this ride through the mountains offers. The event is sponsored by the Rebekah Lodge of Honaker.

REDBUD FESTIVAL TO KICK OFF WITH PRINCESS, JR. MISS, MISS & MS. PAGEANTS

The 24th annual Honaker Redbud Festival Beauty Pageants will be held Friday, April 18, 2008 at the Honaker High School Auditorium. The Princess Pageant will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the Jr. Miss Redbud, Miss Redbud, and Ms. Redbud pageants will follow. All pageants are open to girls from all areas. The Princess Pageant is open to girls 1 day to 13 years old. The Jr. Miss Pageant is for girls ages 14-16 and the Miss Redbud is for girls 17-21. Both the Jr. Miss and Miss pageants are for girls who have never been married. The Ms. Redbud Pageant is for women 22 years or older, married or single.

Entry fee for each pageant is $30.00. Pre-Registration is not required but we must have a least 10 entries in order to have the Ms. Redbud pageant. Entry forms will be available at area schools & businesses. Each contestant will receive a free 10" x 13" picture. Edward Choate Photography will sell packets of pictures to contestants. Admission is $3.00 for adults, and $2.00 for students.

REDBUD FESTIVAL BREAKFAST SPONSORED BY BETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH ON APRIL 19

The Bethany Baptist Church AWANA is sponsoring a Redbud Festival Breakfast on Saturday, April 19, 2008, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Honaker High School Cafeteria. The fee for this All-You-Can-Eat breakfast is $5.00 in advance and $6.00 on the day of the event.

REDBUD FESTIVAL BIRD AND WILDFLOWER WALK PLANNED FOR APRIL 19

The Sixth Annual Honaker Redbud Festival Bird and Wildflower Walk will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at 8:15 a.m. Participants are asked to meet at Slate's Campground to register and begin the Walk.

Slate's Campground is located on Route 672 between Honaker and Blackford off Route 80. The Russell County Birding Association will once again lead the walk. Last year's walkers sighted an American Kestral, as well as several types of warblers and raptors. And wild orchids, columbine, jack-in-the- pulpit, blood root, and wild asters added more color to the morning splendor.

Bring your binoculars, cameras and bird and wildflower books and join the fun.

REDBUD FAMILY FUN DAY TO FEATURE AMUSEMENTS AND MUSIC ON APRIL 19

Children of all ages join the Honaker Redbud Festival on Saturday, April 19, 2008 for games and entertainment on the grounds of New People's Bank. Inflatable games will be available from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Come have fun on the 33 foot slide, the smaller 18 foot inflatable slide, and a bouncing castle. See the inflatable area for tickets.

There will also be an Entertainment Tent this year. The activities in the tent start with the magic of Eric Richardson at 11:30 a.m. Then the Pet Show begins at 1:00 p.m. A sled dog demonstration by Siberian Husky Assist Rescue Team will be part of the Pet Show festivities. A camel from Lost World Ranch will also be present.

Bring your family and friends for the fun, food, crafts, car show, and entertainment Saturday, April 19, 2008. Donation tickets will be sold at the gazebo for hourly drawings. Committee folks will expect to see you there from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

REBUD ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW

The Twenty-first Annual Redbud Festival Arts & Crafts Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the New People's Bank in Honaker. The event will be held outdoors on the Bank grounds. If you enjoy crafts and unusual gift items with good food available, this is the place to be. There will be a set-up fee of $25.00 for non-food vendors and a $50.00 fee for food vendors for a 10 foot by 20 foot space. Additional 10 x 10 spaces are available for $25.00 per space. Vendors should bring their own tents, table, chairs and cooking source, if needed. No electrical or water supplies are available.

REDBUD FESTIVAL CAR AND TRUCK SHOW TO BE HELD ON APRIL 19

The Twenty-first Annual Honaker Redbud Festival Car and Truck Show will be Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the New People's Bank-Honaker. Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. and close at 3:00 p.m. Entries after 3:00 p.m. will receive a dash plaque, but will not be eligible for judging or trophies. Winners will be announced at 4:00 p.m. All model cars and pick-up trucks will be accepted and judged. A special trophy will be given for Farthest Driven.

Entry fees will be $15 on the day of the show. Vehicles can preregister for $12.50 by April 12, 2008. Please send your pre-registration fee to Jim Taylor, P.O. Box 1476, Honaker, VA 24260.

HONAKER REDBUD FESTIVAL "PET SHOW"

Come and bring "Man's best friend", and the rest of the "children" with paws, claws, beaks, feathers, hooves, fur, and scales for the Redbud Festival Pet Show on April 19, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the New Peoples Bank in Honaker. It's a fun show with classes for Adults and Children to show off their beloved pets. There will be classes for every pet. Registration will start at 12:15 and for a small fee of $5.00 you can enter as many classes as you would like for one price per handler. We will have a fashion class (dress up in costumes to catch the judge's eye). Other classes are Relationship, Most Unusual Pet, Special Needs, Trick, Obstacle Course, Hound Dog, Expression, Pet Owner Look a Like, Obedience, and Face Only A Mother Could Love. The Judges Favorite Award is for a pet that has caught the Judge's eye during the show.

Bob and Marcia Horne of the Siberian Husky Assist Rescue based in Bristol, VA will be present form 10:30 to 4:00 to talk about sled dogs and how to adopt Siberian Huskies. During intermission of the Pet Show, Bob will do a sled dog demonstration similar to the simulated Serum Run he recently participated in from Abingdon to Damascus on the Virginia Creeper Trail. The Iditarod Race in Alaska was based on the original Serum Run in 1925. One of his dogs, "Cruiser", will be atthe Redbud Festival, as well as a recent Honaker family Husky adoptee, "Ringo". In addition this year, a camel from Lost World Ranch will be at the Festival and will participate in a pulling demonstration.

Local Talent Featured at 3rd Annual Redbuds and Bluegrass Mountain Music Festival

Area bluegrass fans are in for an exciting show at the 3rd Annual Redbuds and Bluegrass Mountain Music Festival being held as part of the 27th Annual Honaker Redbud Festival on Saturday, April 19, 2008. Bluestone, Tennessee Borderline, Jeff & Tony Brown and Jacky Ray & Friends will be featured in a celebration of local musicians at this year's festival.The event will start at 7:00 p.m. at Honaker High School's A.P. Baldwin Gymnasium.

Bluestone started playing in 2002 and since then has played throughout Southwest Virginia and recently placed in the finals at the SPGMA Convention in Nashville TN. Its members have competed in many festivals and competitions, including the Galax Fiddlers' Convention. Band member and Honaker resident Chris Monk won the title of "Best All Around Performer" at the Tazewell County Fiddlers' Convention in 2005 and the band won first prize at the 2007 Tazewell Fiddlers' Convention. Bluestone has its own unique sound of traditional and modern bluegrass.

This year's Festival features a treat for younger bluegrass fans. Tennessee Borderline is a new bluegrass band with four members who range in age from 15 to 17 years old. Brian Beavers, the group's banjo player, is from the Claypool Hill area. This talented young group is taking the region by storm with bookings including the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival, the Tazewell County Fair and the Virginia Mountain Music Festival.

ell known groups Jeff & Tony Brown and Jacky Ray & Friends feature all star musicians who have performed and recorded with some of the greatest bluegrass musicians of our time. Jeff Brown has played on the Grand Ole Opry with Larry Sparks, and Tony Brown has performed and recorded with some of the greats including Blue Highway. Jacky Ray is a two-time Dobro winner at the Galax Fiddlers' Convention whose stellar band features some of the best talent in the area. So come on out to Honaker on April 19 for a great evening of outstanding mountain bluegrass music!

REDBUD FESTIVAL HOMECOMING DINNER ON APRIL 20.

The Twenty-Fourth Annual Honaker Redbud Festival Homecoming Dinner will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. at the Honaker High School Cafeteria. All area residents and friends, past and present, are invited to share in a great meal and a lot of fellowship. Cost of the meal is $8.00 per plate for adults, and $4.00 for children 12 and under.

Winners of the 2008 Essay Contest will be recognized. The Redbud Festival committee will have several items on sale, including postcards, new caps and T-shirts, stickers, and the Redbud Holiday Cookin' Cook Book, and the new Redbud Essay book, True Tales from the Past, Volume 5", featuring Redbud Essay winners from 1997-2003.

TWENTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL REDBUD CANOE RACE TO BE HELD ON APRIL 20.

The Twenty-seventh Annual Honaker Redbud Festival Canoe Race will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. Registration begins at 2:00 p.m. The race will begin at the Blackford Canoe Access Area and end at the Puckett's Hole Canoe Access Area on the Clinch River. Canoes and kayaks are invited. An entry fee of $10.00 per person will be required. This year's race is a Poker Run with a $100 prize for best hand and a $25 prize for the worst hand.

The annual Canoe Race will begin at the Blackford Canoe Access Area and run 9 miles downstream through some of the most scenic sections of the Clinch River and end at Puckett=s Hole Canoe Access Area. The Blackford Canoe Access Area is on Route 80 three miles south of Honaker and three miles north of Rosedale and US Route 19. The Puckett Hole Access Area is about 6 miles west of Blackford off State Route 652, just north of its intersection with State Route 640.
