
REDBUD FESTIVAL TO KICK OFF WITH
PRINCESS, JR. MISS, MISS & MS. PAGEANTS
The 26th annual Honaker Redbud Festival Beauty Pageants will be held Friday, April 16, 2010 at the Honaker High School Auditorium. The Princess Pageant will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the Jr. Miss Redbud, Miss Redbud, and Ms. Redbud pageants will follow. All pageants are open to girls from all areas. The Princess Pageant starts at ages 1 day to 13 years old. The Jr. Miss Pageant is for ages 13 to15 and the Miss Redbud is for girls 16 to 21. Both the Jr. Miss and Miss pageants are for girls who have never been married. The Ms. Redbud Pageant is for married women ages 18 thru 21 and married or single women 22 years and older. Pre-registration is required for the Ms. Redbud Pageant as we must have at least 10 contestants to have this pageant. No floor length formal gowns will be allowed in the Ms. Pageant. A professional photographer will be taking pictures and offering packages for sale. Each contestant will receive a free 10 x 13 picture.
Entry fee for each pageant is $30.00. Admission is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students. Entry forms will be available at area schools & businesses.

REDBUD FESTIVAL BREAKFAST
The Bethany Baptist Church AWANA is sponsoring a Redbud Festival Breakfast on Saturday, April 17,2010, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Honaker High School Cafeteria. The fee for this All-You-Can-Eat buffet breakfast is $8.00 at the door, $6.00 in advance. Call 873-5875 for advance tickets, or they can be purchased at David's Grocery, McFaddin Associates, and Wallace Hardware.
Get started on a full day of Redbud Festival fun with a big country breakfast, including biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, cooked apples and fried potatoes.
REDBUD FESTIVAL BIRD AND WILDFLOWER WALK
The Eighth Annual Honaker Redbud Festival Bird and Wildflower Walk will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 7:30 a.m. Participants are asked to meet at Slates Campground to register and begin the Walk. Slates Campground is located on Route 672 between Honaker and Blackford off State Route 80.
The Russell County Birding Association will once again lead the walk. Last year's walkers sighted several raptors, including an American Kestral and a Red-tailed Hawk, as well as a Great Blue Heron, a Pileated Woodpecker, Pine Siskins and Yellow-throated Warblers. And wild orchids, columbine, jack-in-the- pulpit, blood root, and wild asters added more color to the morning splendor.
Bring your binoculars, cameras and bird and wildflower books and join the fun.

REDBUD FESTIVAL FAMILY FUN DAY TO FEATURE
AMUSEMENTS AND MUSIC
Children of all ages join the Honaker Redbud Festival on Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. to Dusk for games and entertainment on the grounds of New People's Bank. Swings, rock climbing wall, mechanical bull, and inflatable games, as well as a mini train will be available for a small fee per ride or game. Come have fun.
There will also be an Entertainment Tent this year. Pet Show Registration beings at 10:15 a.m. The Pet Show begins at 11:00 a.m. A sled dog demonstration by Siberian Husky Assist Rescue Team will be part of the Pet Show festivities, as well as a search dog demonstration.
Bring your family and friends for the fun, food, crafts, car show, and entertainment Saturday, April 17, 2010. Enjoy Karaoke with Jeff Meade from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Jeff will be around with announcements all day. REDBUD FESTIVAL ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW
The Twenty-third Annual Redbud Festival Arts & Crafts Show will be held Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. until Dusk at the New People's Bank in Honaker. The event will be held outdoors on the Bank grounds. Bring your chairs to spend the day. If you enjoy crafts and unusual gift items with good food available, this is the place to be.
There will be a set-up fee of $25.00 for non-food vendors for a 12' x 12' space and a $50.00 fee for food vendors for a 12 foot by 24 foot space. Additional 12 x 12 spaces are available for $25.00 per space if paying before March 20. 2009. There will be an additional fee after March 20. Vendors should bring their own tents, table, chairs and cooking source, if needed. No electrical or water supplies are available.

REDBUD FESTIVAL "PET SHOW"
Come and bring "Man's best friend", and the rest of the "children" with paws, claws, beaks, feathers, hooves, fur and scales for the Redbud Festival Pet Show on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Peoples Bank in Honaker. It's a fun show with classes for Adults and Children to show off their beloved pets. There will be classes for every pet. Registration will start at 10:15 and for a small fee of $5.00 you can enter as many classes as you would like for one price per handler. We will have a fashion class (dress up in costumes to catch the judge's eye). Other classes are Relationship, Most Unusual Pet, Special Needs, Trick, Obstacle Course, Hound Dog, Expression, Pet Owner Look a Like, Obedience, and Face Only A Mother Could Love. The Judges Favorite Award is for a pet that has caught the Judge's eye during the show. Trophies and ribbons will be given.
Bob and Marcia Horne of the Siberian Husky Assist Rescue based in Bristol, VA will have a booth set up between 10:00 to 4:00 to talk about sled dogs and how to adopt Siberian Huskies. Some adoptees will be present. One of the dogs, "Cruiser", has run in the Iditarod in Alaska. The Blue Ridge Dryland Sled Dog Club is a branch of the Husky Assist and will have a demonstration using a scooter. Jeff Sparks of Silver Search Dogs will be doing an educational tracking demonstration with his bloodhounds. He has one of the two bloodhound search dog kennels in the state.
Jan Standish, and her rescue border collie, Zeke, will be giving an obstacle agility demonstration. Jan, and Zeke were chosen to be on the Pet Star show on the Animal Planet Channel.

REDBUD FESTIVAL CAR AND TRUCK SHOW
The Twenty-third Annual Honaker Redbud Festival Car and Truck Show will be Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the New Peoples Bank-Honaker. Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. and close at 3:00 p.m. Entries after 3:00 p.m. will receive a dash plaque, but will not be eligible for judging or trophies. Winners will be announced at 4:00 p.m.
All model cars and pick-up trucks will be accepted and judged. A special trophy will be given for Farthest Driven. Entry fees will be $15 on the day of the show. REDBUD AND BLUEGRASS MOUNTAIN MUSIC FESTIVAL
Area bluegrass fans are in for a real treat at the 5th Annual Redbuds and Bluegrass Mountain Music Festival being held as part of the 29th Annual Honaker Redbud Festival on Saturday, April 17 2010. Bluegrass Kinsmen, Adam McPeak and Mountain Thunder, and Smyth County Jam Band will be the feature acts of the show. The event will start at 7:00 p.m. at Honaker High School's A.P. Baldwin Gymnasium.
Well known regional group The Bluegrass Kinsmen will light up the third set of the show featuring all star musicians who have performed and recorded with some of the greatest bluegrass musicians of our time. Jeff Brown has played on the Grand Ole Opry with Larry Sparks, and Tony Brown has performed and recorded with some of the greats, including Blue Highway. Shelby Jewell of Whitewood Virginia is the band's leader and also plays guitar and sings lead vocals. Brother Ebby is a world class mandolin and fiddle player.
Originally formed as a family band in 1971 the group recorded their first album with the well known record label Old Homestead in Michigan. Several band members have gone on to well known bands, including Wayne Taylor(Blue Highway), Darrell Webb and Will Parsons, to name a few.
Adam McPeak and Mountain Thunder is an exciting group of young musicians headed by Adam McPeak, son of Mike McPeak of the legendary McPeak Brothers, who also plays with the group. While young, the band already has an impressive performance history, having played at the Rex Theater in Galax, the Floyd County Store, and Merlefest.
Ersel Fletcher and the Smyth County Jam Band will kick off this year's Festival. Ersel, formerly of Honaker, is well known in Buchanan and Russell County music circles and is now one of the many musicians participating in the Smyth County Jam held on Monday nights in Chilhowie, Virginia. Among those appearing with Ersel are Steve Starnes and Deane Fletcher, both formerly of Honaker.
"Come on out" to Honaker on April 17th for a great evening of great mountain bluegrass music. Tickets are $7.50 at the door. Please bring stadium seats for the bleachers for more comfortable seating.

REDBUD FESTIVAL GOSPEL SING
The 23rd Annual Redbud Festival Gospel Sing will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of New Peoples Bank in Honaker. Arts and Crafts and food vendors will also be set up for the Sing.
This year's Sing features The Master's Servants from Richlands. Joining them will be the Four Winds Gospel Singers of Rosedale and the Green Valley Boys Bluegrass Gospel of Lebanon. Admission is free, but contributions will be accepted.
Bring a comfortable chair and join us for a great afternoon of gospel and praise music.
REDBUD FESTIVAL HOMECOMING DINNER
The Twenty-Sixth Annual Honaker Redbud Festival Homecoming dinner will be held on Sunday April 18, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. at the Honaker High School Cafeteria. All area residents and friends, past and present, are invited to share in a great meal and a lot of fellowship. Cost of the meal is $8.00 per plate at the door, and $6.00 in advance. Advance tickets are available at Wallace Furniture and McFaddin and Associates.
Winners of the 2009 Essay Contest will be recognized.
The Redbud Festival committee will have several items on sale, including postcards, new caps and T shirts, stickers and the new Redbud Essay book, True Tales from the Past, Volume 5", featuring Redbud essay winners from 1997-2003.

REDBUD FESTIVAL CANOE RACE
The Twenty-ninth Annual Honaker Redbud Festival Canoe Race will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. The race will begin at the Blackford Canoe Access Area and end at the Pucketts Hole Canoe Access Area on the Clinch River. Canoes and kayaks are invited. An entry fee of $10.00 per person will be required.
This years race is a Poker Run with a $100 Prize for best hand and a $25 prize of worst hand.
The annual Canoe Race will begin at the Blackford Canoe Access Area and run 9 miles downstream through some of the most scenic sections of the Clinch River (a State Scenic River) and end at Pucketts Hole Canoe Access Area.
The Blackford Canoe Access Area is on Route 80 three miles south of Honaker and three miles north of Rosedale and Us Route 19. The Puckett Hole Access Area is about 6 miles west of Blackford off State route 652, just north of its intersection with State Route 640.
